What is a gas booster?

A gas booster is a pneumatically driven intensifier that uses low-pressure drive gas (e.g. instrument air, typically 1–10 bar) on a large-area piston to compress process gas on the small-area end, producing high-pressure output. It requires no electricity, produces no sparks or heat, and is ideal for boosting, transferring, cylinder charging and gas recovery of nitrogen, natural gas, argon, helium, oxygen and hydrogen in hazardous areas. HIGH-PA air-driven gas boosters reach up to 39,000 psi (≈2,689 bar).

How do I select the right booster model for my application?

Selection is based on four factors: ① required outlet pressure and flow; ② gas type (nitrogen/helium/hydrogen/oxygen affects materials and seal selection); ③ inlet and drive-air pressures (determine the pressure ratio, e.g. 4AG-0.8 = 0.8:1, 6AG1S series = 20–25:1); ④ site conditions (hazardous area class, space, temperature). We recommend providing your process parameters and letting HIGH-PA engineers issue a sizing proposal. Air-driven series cover 90–39,000 psi output; hydraulic-driven series reach up to 46,400 psi.

Which gases can HIGH-PA gas boosters handle?

Non-lubricated air-driven boosters can boost nitrogen, clean natural gas, argon, helium, CO₂, instrument air and most inert gases; with dedicated cleaning and material selection they can also handle oxygen and hydrogen. Hydraulic-driven models cover higher pressure demands. All wetted parts can be supplied to NACE MR0175/MR0103, and the distance-piece design prevents process gas from mixing with drive air.

What is the maintenance interval and what should be checked?

Air-driven boosters use non-lubricated, PTFE-filled seals and typically run thousands of hours maintenance-free. The first part to wear is the high-pressure rod seal in the distance piece; normal leakage is about 0.03–0.1 SLPM. When leakage exceeds ~1 SLPM, or when the cycle counter reaches the recommended value (commonly 10 million cycles, accumulable on a PLC), the seal kit should be replaced. We recommend annual or hours-based service plans; HIGH-PA supplies seal kits and repair services.
